Stride Underwriting is proud to be celebrating its 40th anniversary of providing quality insurance cover to businesses, brokers and individuals throughout the UK.
Stride has come a long way in the last 40 years, but the core values of the business have remained the same. The company is built on the sound principles of investment in staff, expert industry knowledge and an unwavering commitment to service.
Stride’s business milestones
Stride was established as financial services business in 1973, with a focus on life insurance, pensions and property owners insurance. By 1975, Stride had expanded its product offering to the personal lines market, offering home, motor and travel insurance under the name of Computer Quote Insurance.
Computer Quote was the first insurance broker in England to offer insurance rates calculated by computer analysis of risk, and queues formed around the block of the Chichester branch as word spread of this innovation. The next three decades saw Computer Quote branches open in the major towns on the south coast, including Portsmouth, Winchester, Southampton and Bournemouth.
In the 1990s, the popularity of direct insurance providers and the advent of the internet offered significant challenges to Stride’s retail business model, which adapted accordingly. Ecommerce dramatically changed the way customers and businesses search for and buy insurance, and Stride responded to the market by building a multichannel model around high street branches, telephone and web. Personal lines website Computerquoteinsurance.com was launched in 2006 to allow customers throughout the UK to quote for, and buy, car insurance online. By 2008, the Computer Quote retail branches were consolidated into a single contact centre and head office in Denmead, Hampshire and in early 2009 a full set of interactive quote processes was launched online including home, van, pet and travel insurance.
Expertise in property insurance and related products and services is at the heart of Stride’s commercial DNA and Stride has continually tailored its services to businesses as their needs changed. Business customers can now quote for, and buy, insurance cover online for property portfolios, blocks of flats and single properties. Brokers are able to access instant quotes from the Stride Broker Portal and specialist online products for the household and letting markets are under development in 2013.
Stride’s commitment to providing customers with quality insurance cover and the highest standards of service is reflected in continual growth year on year. Today, Stride Underwriting encompasses four businesses including Stride Limited, Computerquoteinsurance.com and Stride Let Protect.
